About Dr. Chris Mortensen, Ph.D.

Dr. Chris Mortensen is a well-recognized scientist and educator whose passion and knowledge of horses has been shared around the world. He earned his B.Sc. at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, master’s degree at California State University, Fresno, followed by his Ph.D. at Texas A&M University, all in Animal Science. His first academic appointment was at Clemson University as the South Carolina State’s Equine Specialist. This was followed up by working at the University of Florida for nearly a decade where in 2015 he was recognized as Teacher of the Year. His ‘The Horse Course’ hosted through Coursera and the University of Florida, continues to be popular and has had over 100,000 enrollments from 164 different countries since it was launched in 2014. Dr. Mortensen’s research over the years has not only focused on equine nutrition, reproduction, and physiology, but also has been on how best to communicate science to not only university students, but also to the masses. He currently lives in New Zealand with his wife and children, where in his spare time he volunteers to help in wildlife conservation through his internationally recognized Top 10 Science & Education ‘All Creatures Podcast’ amongst other pursuits.
